Swans Slip To Fourth

Swanage Town & Herston slipped to fourth in the Dorset Premier League table tonight after Hamworthy Rec's victory saw them move above Swans into third. It could have been worse for Swans however, but Westland Sports slipped up at home to Chickerell, when a victory for Westlands would have knocked Swans down a further place to fifth.

Swans Swoop Four Second Half Win

Swanage Town & Herston 4 Sturminster Newton United 0

Swanage Town & Herston defeated Sturminster Newton United today in the Dorset Premier League, in their final home game of the season. The only incident in a poor first half involved Jacob Harrop missing a harshly awarded penalty and a Stur Newton player receiving a red card for disputing the decision.
The Swans then overpowered the ten men of Sturminster in the second half, Jacob Harrop opened the scoring, then two goals in a minute from Jamie Holland and Lee James put the Swans in the driving seat. Substitute Anthony Warrington sealed the victory with only two minutes remaining.
This result sees Swans moved back into second position in the Dorset Premier League table, above Poole Borough, who could only draw today.

Swans Leapfrog Hornets To Go Second

Swanage Town & Herston 3 Poole Borough 0

Swanage Town & Herston took on Poole Borough today in the Dorset Premier League at Day's Park with Swans looking to grab three points with a win that would see them leapfrog their visitors into second place in the table. In an entertaining encounter, Swans ran out easy winners by three goals, having created numerous chances, which might, on another day, have seen the home side double their tally.
The match was pretty even for the opening quarter of an hour as both sides battled away in the middle of the park underneath the Bank Holiday Monday seaside sunshine, but failed to make any headway.
But on 17 minutes, Jacob Harrop played a super through ball for Jamie Holland to race onto, and he was brought down just inside the box for a penalty, which Jacob Harrop smashed home with his right foot, sending the Poole keeper the wrong way to give Swans the lead.
Borough sought to get back at Swans but then a harmless looking cross from the right by Gary Bartlett, on 23 minutes, was allowed to bounce a couple of times in their own area by a flat footed and hesitant visitors' defence, and Jacob Harrop  nipped in to hook the ball into the net from close range to give Swans a two goal lead.
Poole's best chance of the half came on 41 as an advancing striker lashed a shot just wide of Nick Taylor's goal, but despite a decent period of possession, the Hornets didn't threaten the home goal, and Swans went in at the break looking very comfortable.
The first ten minutes after the turnaround saw the ball in the air for the majority of the time, with neither side looking to break through eithers defence. On 53 minutes, Harrop was neatly played through down the left, and he raced into a one on one situation with the Poole keeper, but what should have been his hat-trick goal only produced groans all round as he blazed the ball well over.
Borough then enjoyed some territorial advantage for the next ten minutes, but again, failed to test Taylor in the home goal. On 66 minutes two great chances came Swans' way, but the visiting goalie made two fine saves, first from Bartlett and then Harrop to keep his side in the game.
A Richard Sands floated cross from the right on 71 was then met beautifully at the far post by Harrop, who was unlucky to see his powerful header cannon off the post. A Borough inswinging corner two minutes later bounced off the top of the Swans crossbar, but that was only a brief foray into the Swans area, as the home side looked to finish the job off in the final 15 minutes.
Holland had a superb chance to score after being played in by Harrop, but could only produce a weak attempted lob into the advancing keeper's arms. The third goal eventually came on 87 however, after Harrop surged down the left, played the ball into the path of Gary Bartlett, who neatly sidestepped his marker before curling in an absolute beauty of a shot into the far corner, from the edge of the box. As a footnote to the season, it was also possibly the goal that killed off the Hornets' fading title challenge.
It was no more than Swanage deserved for their impressive display, and they could have added another a minute into added time when a scorching break down the left involving Holland and Harrop resulted in the latter's fine drive being excellently saved by the Poole keeper. The three points gained results in Swans going up to second, and although a few chasing teams will probably overhaul Swans come the final table, this game proved to be yet another example that Swans should be a force to be reckoned with next term.

Chickens Stuff Swans

Swanage Town & Herston 0 Chickerell United 3

High flying Swanage Town & Herston were brought crashing down to earth today after they were well beaten, by 0-3 at Day's Park against Chickerell United in the Dorset Premier League. In an uninspiring match, which had a real end-of-season going-through-the motions feel to it, Chickerell could have won the game by half time, but had to wait until the final five minutes to make sure of the points.
The opening 25 minutes were confined to a midfield scrap, with the only real chance coming on 6 minutes when a great run from midfield went unchallenged before a Chickerell player crashed the ball off the Swans' goalpost. On 26 minutes Swans' defence was static as they allowed the visitors to slice them open but the forward unbelievably shot wide with only Nick Taylor to beat in the Swans goal.
Three minutes later and a lovely turn at the near post resulted in Chickerell blazing over when, once again, the Swans goal was at their mercy. With ten minutes remaining to half time, Swans at last started to build some pressure, but all they had to show for it was a couple of corners, that the bigger visiting side dealt with. Chickerell finally took a deserved lead on 43 minutes after there was a scramble on the edge of the home box, and a Chickens player wriggled free to fire past an exposed Taylor for 0-1, which was how it stayed until half time.
The second half started sluggishly as neither side could get their passing game going. Swans enjoyed a good amount of possession, but looked to be lacking a cutting edge up front, whilst the visitors always looked likely to add to their tally on the break. The match was littered with petty fouls and was riddled with mistakes from both sides, as the hard bumpy surface dictated much of the disappointing play.
On 65, some neat approach play from Chickerell resulted in a great chance to double their advantage, but Taylor pulled off an excellent save with his feet at his near post to keep his side in the game.
Swanage finally began to stroke the ball about and worry the visitors, building a period of pressure midway through the half, but tellingly, the Chickerell goalie was not called upon to make any notable save. With Swans pushing forward looking for an equaliser, half chances were created and missed by Gary Bartlett, Ricky King, Aaron Corby and Jamie Holland, but in truth, Chickerell were increasingly looking the more assured side as their improving passing game started to rip Swanage's defence to shreds.
It was therefore no surprise when they took a 0-2 lead on 85 minutes, although it was handed to them on a plate, after Taylor in the home goal, and centre back Mark Bryant both hesitated to clear a harmless looking ball into the Swans' 6 yard box, and a Chickens striker nipped in between the two to lash the ball into the net at the near post.
Chickerell created a few more openings as the game became very end to end and open, and with Swanage's defence again being exposed through some hesitency, and some incisive Chickens passing, Chickerell made sure of the points, on the break once more, as an unmarked striker lashed the ball home from inside the box on 86 minutes, for 0-3.
The final scoreline was a fair reflection on the chances created, but Swanage will be deeply disappointed that they failed to win a game that would have taken them to within two points of league leaders Portland.
Swans have now also slipped to third due to Poole Borough's victory today at Bridport.

Swans See Red –
New Kit Colour Announced For Next Season

Swanage Town & Herston first team will have a new kit colour next season, after the Football Club committee voted in favour of an idea that will see Jason Phillips' side take to the field for the 2009-10 season in an all red kit.Swans' new kit (prototype - badge to be added)
The kit colour change, which will certainly shock those older fans who have been watching Swans in their traditional white strip for many decades, brings an end to just over one hundred years of Swanage football teams playing in white shirts.
Swans’ all red kit is to be sponsored by Purbeck Promotions, and the idea came about from the fact, established in a recent local newspaper poll, that 87% of football fans in and around the Swanage area support either Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal, all of which play in red.
The Football Club committee’s idea is that the familiar and popular red colour will attract more fans to Day’s Park, as they will be able to identify with the club playing in their main team’s red colours.
A spokesman for the committee told the website that, "this is a radical idea that we hope will have fans flocking to watch Swanage, and is part of the Chairman’s five year plan to get the Club into the Southern League."
As part of the four-figure sponsorship deal, replica kits will also be produced to be sold to supporters, and the Club spokesman added that, "whilst not exactly painting the town red, the Club certainly hopes that these new style kits will colour the town red".
